Ken Marchionno Atemoztli Dancers, P. V. Mexico, 2013.11.19   On view from January 1 to January 18, 2014

Atemoztli Dancers confronts how we view videos and how the viewer places what's seen within a context that isn't shown.  Taking visual cues from historic Salvage Ethnography films—plain white background, technical glitches, camera placement—the video literally records a contemporary Pre-Columbian dance troupe from Jalisco, Mexico. Residing somewhere between ethnographic film and tourist recording, the video places the viewer in a conundrum of how to take what is shown and is compelled to face their preconceived understanding of what they see.
